Rare – Selena Gomez

Recently Selena Gomez came out with an album called Rare. It is her comeback album after four years of only singles being released. I personally think it was well worth the wait. I don’t think if she had released this album four years ago that it would have turned out as great as it has. Although I think each song on this album is so beautiful, I am just going to talk about my favorites :).

Rare- The self titled song is definitely on my list of favorites from this album. In this song she is embracing and acknowledging that she is not being treated right in the relationship. That she is not being treated like the rare human being that she is. And she points out in the chorus that “I don’t have it all, I’m not claiming to, but I know that I’m special” which I think is just so beautiful in it’s simplicity.

No doubt Gomez wanted this song to be important everyone, reminding them that just because one person is treating you badly in a relationship doesn’t mean another will. You deserve to feel special, because you are.

Dance Again- I don’t know if this one is a favorite of anyone else, but I am obsessed with this song. I think I am obsessed with it is because I was a former dancer myself. And it has been years since I have taken a class, and recently I took up a class and have never felt better. So hearing this song, just made me feel amazing.

My favorite lyric of the song “I kick start the rhythm, while the drama’s in remission”. I love how she says the last line, “the drama’s in remission” it’s a wonderful acknowledgment to the fact that no matter what you do you will always somehow be subjected to drama in your life. But you have the power to control how much of it you allow in your life.

Look At Her Now- “Of course she was sad, but now she’s glad, she dodged a bullet” Oh the nod to her ex. I love it. I love that she finally reached that point where she realized that “he who shall not be named” is not good for her. This song I really related to because I myself have gone through a pretty bad break up that consumed my world for the past 4+ years.

And of course, when I bring up this song, I am also bringing up the song Lose You To Love Me. This two songs came to us together, so I am going to mention them together. Both songs hold the same message, but both create such different emotions from me.

Lose You To Love Me is perfect. Each lyric carefully placed to explain a story we know nothing about. We may have watched their relationship play out through the media, but we don’t know what really went on. “You promised the world, and I fell for it” I think everyone of us have felt this at least once. I know I have. And she ends this song in the most simple way “And now the chapter is closed and done, and now it’s goodbye, it’s goodbye for us.” This song is so simple, so similar to her song The Heart Wants What It Wants. Watching her go from that song to this is something so amazing.

Ring– Oh the sass of this song. I love, love, love this song. My favorite line of this song would have to be ” Yeah, I received your message, all twenty three, you know Jordan with it G-O-A-T” ah! Just love it. I can’t explain it properly. It just feels like she is mocking the men that have come her way.

Vulnerable– This song speaks of just that, vulnerability. Love is the most vulnerable and beautiful thing us humans do. It’s scary and blinding. And as we have seen in the media, Gomez has gone through a whole lot when it comes to love. Probably has gone through more than we will ever know. Yet here she is saying that even though this person can hurt her, burn her, and break her she would rather stay vulnerable. Because that is all she knows. She would rather be vulnerable than closed off. And I think that is just beautiful.

Crowded Room (feat. 6lack)– This song gives me butterflies. It’s the beginning of meeting someone, getting to know someone. The anticipation of is he going to call, is this going to work, does he feel the same? The feeling like you are the only two people in the room.

For some reason this song reminded me of Taylor Swift’s song Dress. It has that same sultry, sexy sound to it. And the same secretive message of something only two people know about. The start of a love that is kept under raps. The lyric from this one that stuck out to me was “The more that I give the more that I get” this lyric is sung by 6lack and is my favorite line of the song because it’s everything that a healthy and true relationship should be.

Fun– “We got something in this room, can’t make that up, you may not be the one, but you look like fun!” This song is exactly how the title says. Fun! It just makes you want to dance around and think of that person that makes your heart beat quick. This is for those people who aren’t looking for the one, but just for some fun. Not every person you met is going to have that potential of being a love, but they do have that potential of being fun.

Cut You Off– “Got chop-chop all the extra weight, I’ve been carrying it for fourteen-hundred sixty days, gotta, gotta, gotta clean my slate”

There is not one like that I don’t love. This entire song is my favorite lyric, but the one that sits with me the most is the opening lyric. Again we come back to the realizing that someone is bad for you and how you just want to get rid of anything that reminds you of them. You just want to cut them off. Start realizing all the things you can have now that you are rid of that one person who was holding you back. Make a clean break, start a clean slate. This song is everything when you finally realize you are better off.

So here is my thank you to you, Selena Gomez, for creating such a beautiful masterpiece. Thank you for every song on here, including the ones I didn’t get to  People You Know, Let Me Get me, Kinda Crazy, and A Sweeter Place. Thank you for taking your time with this album and thank you for giving us everything we needed from these songs. <3

Until next time…

Justine
